Everyone already knows that planning a wedding is no walk in the park. There are so many details to think about and so much work that has to be done within a certain order. One thing to place importance on is the reception and the music that you will provide for it.
There is of course the option of the DJ but the live music of a wedding band can really get the party started. So, now that you know that the band is so important, you want to make sure that you are looking at the right things when you hire them.
The first thing to do when searching for a wedding band is to watch them perform. The majority of bands have shows aside from private performances, so ask them if they perform live and try to watch a show. As well, ask if the band has a demo CD or DVD, you can watch, as all these suggestions will give you a good indication if this band is suitable for your wedding reception.
If the wedding band that you are considering has a website, you will want to research it. You should be able to see videos, photos, and listen to some of their music tracks. How well the website is set up can give you a big clue on how professional they are.
In addition to images and videos, you will also often find testimonials on the site from previous customers. This will give you an idea of how other customers felt about the band. The site should also list all the songs, or at least the majority, that the band knows and plays well which is important information.
Try to choose a band whose music will appeal for many individuals. If you go with something like progressive jazz or heavy rock, it may be rather specialized for your guests, whereas something like 70’s soul or disco music will appeal to people of any age.
Pricing is a very important part of this whole process, and will play a big role in the wedding band you decide upon. Earnings should be discussed up front with the band manager and once you have hit upon a price, sign a contract to that effect. Generally, you will be required to pay an upfront non-refundable deposit in order to hold your position.
It is a good idea to call the wedding band within a week or so of your wedding to confirm all the details. Make sure they have the correct wardrobe for the event and that they are clear on the earliest time they can come and set up.
You will want to provide the band with a meal; after all, the wedding band typically travels a good bit and works very hard for your reception. Also, make sure that the wedding band as a timeline for the special events and announcements that will take place throughout the reception so that everything can flow nicely.
